Change can bring up a whirlwind of emotions — uncertainty, anticipation, excitement, even grief. It's a deeply human experience, especially when it comes without warning or when it challenges our sense of stability at work.
Over the years, I've learned that how we move through change often says more about our growth than the change itself. It's not about staying unaffected — it's about staying grounded.
This post shares a few of the strategies I've found helpful (and some I'm still learning) when navigating organizational shifts, reorgs, or moments of personal transition. Inspired by insights from Rebecca Knight's work on resilience and mindset, these are reminders worth returning to whenever the ground starts to shift.
1. Give Yourself Grace
Change stirs up a lot — and that's okay. Before you rush to adapt or outperform your own expectations, pause. Let yourself feel what's coming up. Processing takes time. You don't need to have it all figured out in one week. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is give yourself permission to catch your breath.
"Resetting doesn't mean starting over. It means reconnecting to what matters."
2. Build Resilience Through a Growth Mindset
Uncertainty can feel like a threat — or an invitation. A growth mindset reframes the unknown as something with potential, not danger. This doesn't mean toxic positivity. It means reminding yourself that you've navigated change before. You're not starting from scratch; you're starting from experience.
3. Seek Support — Thoughtfully
Work friendships are powerful, especially in turbulent times. But be mindful of how and where you process stress. Lean on trusted personal networks outside of work where you can share freely and get perspective. Processing is necessary — spiraling isn't.
4. Look for the Silver Lining
It sounds cliché, but moments of change often carry unexpected gifts. Maybe it's a chance to try something new, step into leadership, or redefine what success means to you. Ask yourself:
- What might this change make possible?
- What have I learned about myself already through this?
5. Stay Objective
Positivity is powerful, but clarity is critical. If change keeps coming without communication or direction, it's okay to ask deeper questions. Does your current role or organization still align with your values? Your goals? Sometimes change reveals what was no longer working.
6. Reflect and Reevaluate
Use this moment to check in with yourself. What are your strengths? What energizes you? What do you want to build next? Change isn't just something to "get through." It can be a reset point — a moment to realign your career with who you're becoming.
Let's Keep the Conversation Going
If this resonates, you're not alone. I'd love to hear how you stay grounded during change — whether it's a routine, a mindset shift, or a quote that pulls you back into alignment.
Drop a note, reach out directly, or start a conversation with someone else going through a similar transition.
Final thought: Change is hard. But it can also be clarifying. You don't have to navigate it perfectly — just intentionally. Stay grounded, stay open, and be kind to yourself along the way.
